Association professionals have long suspected that the best and brightest are drawn to associations. And now there's proof. In Where the Winners Meet: Why Happier, More Successful People Gravitate Toward Associations,* Arthur Brooks concludes that individuals who are successful and satisfied with their professional lives gravitate toward association membership. The study researches the reasons members join and defines why they stay. Not surprisingly, the key is value.
What do your members value? How do you deliver value to them? Knowing the answers to these questions is vital if you want your association to be the place where winners meet!
In 2006, Arthur C. Brooks, Ph.D., surprised the association world with his study Generations and the Future of Association Participation.* This groundbreaking report showed that the fear of the "non-joiner Gen-X" was baseless. Not only is Generation X joining associations, it is joining in higher percentages than baby boomers.
Brooks is an expert on public policy and economics who has published extensively on social entrepreneurship and the connections between culture, politics and economic life. He contributes regularly to The Wall Street Journal's editorial page and is a visiting scholar at the American Enterprise Institute.
*Both studies were funded by the William E. Smith Institute for Association Research.

Brock will discuss his new book Charlatan, the riveting story of Dr. Morris Fishbein of the American Medical Association and "Dr." John Brinkley, huckster extraordinaire and one of the 20th century's most brazen murderers. Dr. Fishbein dedicated his life to ending Brinkley's career and clearly demonstrates how one association—and one association professional—can change the world.
Pope Brock, a native of Atlanta, has worked as a freelance journalist for more than 25 years, covering sumo wrestling, tomb-robbing, cheating scandals, robot races, Katharine Hepburn, Romanian adoptions and a host of other subjects for GQ, Esquire, Rolling Stone, People, the London Sunday Times Magazine and other publications. He is the author of two books. His most recent book is Charlatan: America's Most Dangerous Huckster, the Man Who Pursued Him and the Age of Flimflam (Crown). During February 2008, it was the most enthusiastically reviewed book in the United States, hailed by the New York Times ("told with uproarious brio…heavenly") and a score of other major publications.

Value of Metrics: Measuring Success
Associations operate at a rapid pace. The merger of data and instinct is essential in the strategic planning process. But then there is barely time to breathe between programs and projects. Who has time to stop and measure whether a program is a success? The real question is "What are you missing if you're NOT using data and metrics? Learn how the Emergency Nurses Association uses data and metrics to support its strategic plan to deliver value and drive results.
